Certified Reduction Unit. One tonne of CO₂e reduced or removed, verified under a CERT methodology, serialised and publicly traceable.
Demonstration that the emission reduction would not have happened without carbon revenue. At CERT, demonstrated exclusively via transparent financial analysis.
A pooled, non-tradable reserve of CRUs contributed by nature-based projects to compensate for reversals across the market.
Free, Prior and Informed Consent. Mandatory where Indigenous Peoples or Local Communities are affected by a project.
Monitoring, Reporting and Verification. Digital MRV refers to direct ingest of meter, sensor and satellite data.
Project Design Document. The primary technical document submitted for project registration.
Validation & Verification Body. An accredited third party that validates project designs and verifies emission reductions.
Voluntary Carbon Markets Integrity Initiative. Publishes the Claims Code used to guide credible corporate claims.
Unique identifier for a CRU. Non-reusable, monotonically increasing per methodology and vintage, encoding host country and year.
Permanent, public removal of a CRU from circulation with a signed certificate naming the beneficiary and purpose.
